Question:
When I try to open a file that is sent to me via e-mail, sometimes it tells me that there isn?t a program associated with the attachment. Why can?t I open these files?
Answer:
The most likely problem is that you don?t have the necessary program installed to open this type of file. Another possible problem is that the file is missing its file extension. Download the attachment and then right click on the file and click on Properties. If the file has a file extension attached to it (for instance, ?.doc? for Microsoft Word Document or ?.mov? for QuickTime movie) you will need to install the program associated with the file (such as Microsoft Word for a .doc file or QuickTime for a .mov file). If the file has no file extension attached to it (It?ll just say ?File? under ?type of file? in the properties window, because it won?t know what type of file it is since the file extension is missing or unrecognizable) then ask the person who sent you the email what type of file its supposed to be (for instance ? is it a document, video, picture, etc.?) and then right click on the file, click on rename, and add the file extension to the end of the file name (for instance, add the missing ?.doc? to the end of the file if its supposed to be a Microsoft Word document). You should then be able to open the file with the program associated with that file type, if you have that program installed.
